Acoustic Bass vs an Up-right or Double Bass
Does anyone think that with the gas prices, smaller vehicles, better quality PA systems etc.... that regular acoustic Basses (looks like a large Dreadnaught or J series Acoustic guitar) will make a comeback and replace the Up-right? The vehicles of the future will probably be smaller in response to the gas racket, at least for a while. Some of the up-right basses will be larger than the cars.

I know I'm thinking about getting a bass guitar. They are so much cheaper than the doghouses. I don't know if they'll replace the upright though. I think that you'll see big name bluegrass bands using uprights, and more smaller bands using bass guitars. And yeah, that'll be something, driving a car bigger than a bass!

Acoustic vs Up-right Bass
Recently I'm seeing more of the Bluegrass bands tolerate more of the non-uprights. Not all groups and not for every venue, however I was wondering if it was going to be like the late 70's and early 80's in that a lot of the touring BG bands were using a non-upright.
I have played several gigs lately with an acoustic bass that was a non up-right. This Bass was mic'd like a guitar at the bridge/sound hole and sounded good, also the audience enjoyed the music & didn't seen to mind.
I asked the Bass player why the acoustic & he told me he didn't have to drive his F350 (6 Pack) to haul the up-right and when he did haul it, his wife had to sit in the back because the Bass fit between back & front seats of the cab.
Thanks

Yeah, uprights are just really big. The jam that I go to at a music store uses the store's bass. That way nobody has to lug around a bass of their own.
